Hmm.. had a weird error when trying to connect to my ftp site from here.. not the usual login failed.. so I thought I'd try and post again.

After a day of playing around with Ximian and wishing I was using Enlightenment again, I've now decided to stick with Ximian. When ftp'ing finally works and this blogger is finally up-to-date I may put up a few screenshots of my old and new desktops. The reason why I've decided I like this is the fact that I now have all the programs I should ever really need at the top of my screen. Redcarpet is perhaps too much hassle than it's worth, since d/ling from the Redhat site takes a long time, it doesn't look for cached copies, and it's had problems installing some things. But we'll see how it goes. Redcarpet certainly has it's advantages if I can get it to work.

I've also now got galeon.. one of the reasons I upgraded to Ximain Gnome 1.4 since I was having major dependency issues. Galeon is sooo cool and now takes precedence over mozilla. However there are a few downsides.. such as tabs being there even when you only have one page open (such as now).. I'm having enough trouble with this screen size as it is. And the really useful search-engine bookmark toolbar is fantastic.. just a shame I can't minimise it when I need more room. Still, I have a few nice themes now.. and pretty much everything is as I need it (I spent last night organising bookmarks and getting the look exactly as I like it.

So YAY for Ximian and Galeon. Yay!

So much for fixing Ximian dependencies. Ok, so we did fix them. But it took a helluva lot of hassle and we thought we'd managed to break the machine. Fortunately it all when well in the end and we're slowly downloading the needed packages. Fortunately, redcarpet is sensible enough to notice if you already have some of the rpm's in it's cache, and then you can chose not to download them. Fortunate cause I had to stop the d/ling earlier while Rat rebooted after some critical M$ updates.

On the topic of the updates, looks as though M$ are keeping up to their promise of just fixing old code and doing no new code in Feb.. shame they chose the shortest month of the year to do fixes.

Spurs vs Blackburn on Sunday for the Worthington Cup Final. In Cardiff!!! YAY!!

I actually have things to say today, however random and pointless. I doubt anyone will get to view them for a long while yet anyway.. but here goes..

Got a mole removed yesterday (well, the day before i guess). After a few jabs of local anaesthetic, the doctor then sawed it off, and then cauterised it. The smell of burning flesh is not nice, I must say, especially when it's yours. Of course, it didn't start hurting until well into the afternoon. And now I can't lie on my right hand side, and it's uncomfortable to walk lots, or curl up my legs. And sleeping funny last night means my back hurts too. :(

As one part of the flat saga gets fixed, another starts. We think the window in the front door is fine now, but we have a new neighbour instead. The girl in flat 3 moved out yesterday, and someone new moved in this evening. What a racket. Not only did he make sure to bang every door shut so loud that the walls shook, but he also had his TV up so loud that I could virtually hear it word for word whlie trying to watch my own TV. Gah!

The moral of this story, is to never rent, or if you rent get either a) a house on it's own, or b) somewhere so expensive you can afford to be picky.

It's Rain's birthday party on Saturday, and I'm planning to dress up as Buffy. Of course, this is a simple costume and means I can wear normal clothers. Except for the stakes that is. The stakes are posing a little bit of a problem. Next stop, Homebase.

I can't believe that upgrading from the old Gnome to Ximian Gnome 1.4 is such a hassle. The installer works fine over a proxy, but dependencies aren't so easy to resolve.. and the whole point of upgrading is to solve dependency problems. So I've resorted to fetching certain rpm's from redhat's own ftp site. Hopefully tomorrow Ximian may actually like me. Oh, and don't ever ask for the devel packages.. at least not if you only have a dial-up.. if you do it'll take forever to download, even at the best possible download speeds.

In the random chance that dalnet may actually be working today, I thought I'd post some stuff. Just a load of links to some quizzes I did. But firstly a few things about what is going on with me.

Finally managed to buy vege mince. Woot!!!

The I found fungi in the bathroom.. it's dead now we think.. but we still need to work up the courage to actually remove it.

Gonna have a mole removed tomorrow. I''m scared shitless. I hate pain.

Tried to get Ximian today. When we realised it'd take more than 10 hours to download everything (partly cause we requested the devel packages too) we decided to give up until the weekend.

Found a cool link on linkfilter: religion.

Now for the test links:

Hmmm.. I just typed a post.. but it didn't wanna work.. Lets see if I can rememb
er what I typed.

Sed.. I hate sed. I love sed. It's damn useful, damn irritating, and damn hard
to use! And the documentation is incredibly bad. But at least my first shell
script actually works.

On another note, a really useful tool to get is html tidy. I got it from the w3c, but I believe the project is hosted at sourceforge. Anyway, it's and incredibly useful tool for
finding/fixing errors in html, and for neatening up the code. I love it.

Yay!!!! I managed to make decent omeletes today. Omeletes and pancakes in one week.. you might start to think I can cook.

Also got to see the musical ep of Buffy (well timed for valentines day I noticed), and it was sooooo COOL. Everyone sang well.. well.. except for Willow.. but I guess that's why she hardly had any lines. Spike would make a fantastic rockstar. And Spike kisses Buffy!!!! Woot!!!

Thinking of writing my first shell script today/tomorrow. Boy, that'll be fun ;) I'm also pissed off at my computer. I spent hours compiling the beta for the latest version of kvirc (TWICE!).. and it doesn't seemed to have installed.. after all that time. So I'm sulking now. I wanted to try out the new version so that I could transfer the script I use, and actually make it mine, rather than an extended version of someone else's. Oh well. No loss I guess. Except for the fuzziness before my eyes last night that was seemingly unnecessary.

Enough waffling. I need to get back to IRC before I have withdrawal symptoms.

Been playing around with my stylesheet on my books page.. hopefully now it should actually be readable with low brightness. Also added the next section. It's gonna be damn annoying when I have to move everything from the test directory, but, oh well.. I can cope.

It's soooo nice to be able to ftp things properly. Makes things a helluva lot easier than using the crappy geocities upload program, or shoving the other half off his machine to upload files. And the added bonus of being able to d/l files too.. I like ncftp ;)

Sunday, February 10, 2002

Just checking to see if I can upload stuff now. Managed to update stuff to geocities via my ftp today (yippee! I can now ftp!!!). If you wanna take a look at my new look website go to New World of Books. E-mail me and let me know what you think. I'm also adding a few linux pages to this site (although very incomplete). Hopefully they'll be linkable from the index page as soon as I manage to upload stuff. I've discovered I can now see my webpage again.. but there still doesn't seem much luck on the ftp'ing side of things. Cross fingers.

Oh.. and if you didn't do it already.. GO SEE MONSTERS INC. :)

Saturday, February 09, 2002

Well, I've got lots to blog about, but I can't be bothered.. so this will be a quicky.

1) Watch Monsters Inc. if you haven't already.. it's excellent.. and when you watch it.. watch to the very end of the titles.

2) I hate my flat, I hate my landlady.. I wanna get out of here. If only things were that easy.

3) I have ftp clients. We finally think they're working.. but then they aren't. The ones that work are either shareware, or don't accept passive connections.. gah! And they don't seem to like my password for this site. Double gah!
